Advertising & affiliate disclosure

Balkan Lakes is free to read. To cover its costs, the site may show advertising and partner (affiliate) links, and pages may be sponsored. This page explains how.

At the moment the site shows no advertising, no partner links and no sponsorship. This page describes the rules that will apply when they start, and it will be updated then.

Partner links

Some links to accommodation, tours, car rental or outdoor gear may be partner links: if you book or buy through them, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. They appear in boxes labelled “Partner links”, after the practical information on a page, and in guides, where a line at the top of the article says that it contains them. Partner links never appear inside the facts about a lake.

Advertising

Ads are labelled “Advertisement”. We use no pop-ups, no video or sound that plays by itself, and no ads that stick to the screen or expand. There are no ads on maps, in filters or in search, on this page or on the Report an issue page, and never more than one ad on a phone screen at a time.

Sponsorship

A tourism board or an outdoor brand may sponsor a page, such as a country or activity page. A sponsored page says “Sponsored by” with the sponsor’s name. A sponsor replaces the page’s ad and never adds to it.

What money never changes

Advertising, partner links and sponsorship never change the facts we publish, which lakes are included, the order of lists and search results, the “Recommended” order, which lakes are featured, or how we check information.

Your choices

Advertising and partner tracking load only as you allow in the cookie settings. If you say no, you see only non-personalised ads or none, and partner links carry no tracking beyond what the link itself needs. Your location is never passed to partners.
