Country

Croatia

Croatia is best known for Plitvice, a chain of lakes stepped down a forested valley by travertine barriers and waterfalls, and the country's oldest national park.

Along the coast, Vransko jezero near Biograd is the largest natural lake in Croatia and a nature park full of birds, and on the island of Cres a lake of the same name holds fresh water in the middle of a limestone island. Inland, the Krka widens into lakes between its waterfalls, and the karst around Imotski hides the deep Red and Blue Lakes.

At Plitvice and Krka, tickets and boardwalks keep visitors on marked paths, and swimming is not allowed.
