Country
Greece is better known for its sea, but the mainland holds a varied set of lakes, from the Prespa lakes on the northern border to the lagoon of Messolonghi on the Gulf of Patras.
In the north, Kastoria sits on a peninsula in Lake Orestiada, and Kerkini, a reservoir on the Strymon, has become one of Europe's great places for birds, with Dalmatian pelicans close to the boats. Lake Doiran is shared with North Macedonia, and in the Peloponnese, Stymphalia is a reedy karst lake below the mountains of Corinthia.
In Epirus, Ioannina looks out over Lake Pamvotida and its inhabited island, and further south Trichonida is the largest natural lake in Greece.
