Romania's lakes range from glacial tarns high in the Carpathians to the lagoons and channels of the Danube Delta.

The Retezat and Făgăraș mountains hold many glacial lakes; Bâlea, on the Transfăgărășan road, is the easiest to reach. In the Eastern Carpathians, Saint Anne's Lake fills a volcanic crater, and the salt lakes of Sovata draw bathers.

Along the Danube, the Iron Gates reservoir, shared with Serbia, fills the gorge between the Carpathians and the Balkan Mountains, and in the Delta and the Razim–Sinoie lagoons the lakes are reached by boat, past reed beds, pelicans and fishing villages.
