The Iron Gate I dam closes the Danube at the lower end of the Iron Gates gorge, near Kladovo in Serbia and Drobeta-Turnu Severin in Romania. Built jointly by the two countries, it holds back the Iron Gates Reservoir and carries a road across the river with a border crossing.
Each country has its own power station and its own ship locks, and the dam is best seen from the riverbanks below it or from a boat on the Danube.
